I’ve always wanted to get my motorcycle license but growing up in New-Brunswick there was tons of hoops to go thru and to me it did not seem to be worth the hassle. In New-Brunswick there is 3 different motorcycle licenses regardless of age or skill. 50cc or under, 600cc or under & finally 601cc or over. 3 different licenses and you never start off with a big bike so it doesn’t make sense to try and get that license first.

But now I live in Alberta and things are SUBSTANTIALLY easier. I’ve been here for 10 years so I should of done it sooner but better late than never. Here it is super simple. Take a written test which is 30 multiple choice questions. Once you pass that test you are now qualified to ride a bike on the road as long as you are riding with someone who has their full license.

After that to get your full license all you need to do is pass a 30min road test. You can do this at ANY time after passing the written exam. You could realistically pass your written exam and do the road test right after. There is no probationary period at all.

One written test $17.80

One Road Test $131.25

So $150 bucks and passing the 2 tests makes you fully legal to ride any motorcycle.

I’m gonna take the written test next week then look at buying a bike to do the road test.

What’s your riding history?

Nice! Good luck! I had no idea NB was so restrictive. I’m glad that as an American I didn’t have to do anything special to ride my 800cc bike across the province. :)

Is there anything like the MSF course in Canada?

Can you take a safety course? Ontario offers them and you get the license at the end of it iirc.

I don’t know . I took a motorcycle safety course. Passing the course included passing the course road test. That in turn entitled me to getting a full blown motorcycle license. So for a low fee of like 300 bucks and a two day course, I got it all done. What I am trying to say is that it wasn’t that complicated. I got mine in NY state, but I think NJ has similar laws.

We do have a MSF course you can take but you don’t get the license at the end you still have to go to the DMV to pass the road test.

I’ve ridden lots of bikes before but my background is motocross. Balance, shifting and clutch control is no problem for me so I don’t think the course is necessary. I’m not nervous on a bike at all.

Strictly motocross but since clutch control, balance ,braking and shifting is not a problem and I’m very comfortable on a bike,I don’t think the MSF course is necessary in my case.

License, pssht, just get out there and ride. You can outrun the cops if you need to!

But seriously, cool! And good luck!

Here the course is $650 and it does NOT include passing the road test and you do NOT automatically get your license by passing the course. That is an additional $130 bucks.

I’ve ridden LOTS of bikes before just not legally so I’m more than comfortable on a bike and don’t think the course is needed in my case.

I think those courses are more geared towards someone who has never sat on a bike in their life.

Been there done that(not the outrunning part but the riding without the license part). I’m too old for that now it would be nice to ride legally for a change.

She’s on board with me getting the license, she said it can’t hurt have the license and she is ok with me having a bike. She is just not ok with me spending money on a bike. So I’ll have to find a nice bike for not too many pesos.

That seems a bit on the expensive side for the class. Come to states, get your license here and then just transfer it.

I learned a bunch of things from the course. You may know how to turn or operate gears and all, but there are things you may not know. Your call how you do it. Just get it done. Then we can ride together. We’ll be the Oppo Bike Gang lol ... OBG

Good luck! I want to do that to, sound like we’re in our much the same boat, or sidecar as it were? I’m going on 30 and haven’t ridden in a few years but I used to ride a bunch, anywhere from mopeds to 130ci choppers.

It is VERY expensive for a day and a half of riding a CBR125.

I could almost buy that bike for that much.

Me in the other hand has little exp on motorbikes, it be perfect for me, and you get insurance discount.

Ontario has a long arse processes, graduated system. Takes over a year or so.

31 here. Owned a half dozen motocross bikes. Ridden a 50cc Honda NS50 for years illegally. Ridden various other bikes here and there. It’s time to get legal and get a proper road going motorcycle.

oh you meant Albertans in general. I thought it was a term of bike like a squid or something.

Yup they are pretty terrible.

Preface this by saying I’m not meaning to talk down or anything, just my thoughts.

Because you don’t get a license from taking the MSF, I’d say skip it. However, I’ve seen people with “tons of dirt bike experience” fail out of the MSF, and they use tiny 125cc bikes. Asphalt throws dirt dudes through a loop just like dirt can throw asphalt dudes through a loop.

You can, though, get your bike and basically do the same maneuvers in a parking lot. Your tiered license confuses me, though. I can’t really make an suggestions on what bike to go with except maybe an SV650 or Versys. Definitely not a Goldwing (like my dad took his test on) or a big, heavy, can’t-turn-for-shit cruiser, but I’m sure you’re smarter than that.

Cheers, and good luck.

I’m in Alberta so the tiered license doesn’t concern me here. I was just stating on how it is in my home province and why I never bothered.

In Alberta and can realistically no word of a lie pass my test with an 80cc automatic scooter then turn around and go buy a Hayabusa and it’s fully ok.

I’m not gonna bother with the course since it is $650 bucks around here.

I know asphalt is not the same but honestly how hard can it be?

It’s more of a feeling thing, cause you don’t slide and I know some people want to put their foot out in corners, which, hey, if you wanna be all super moto bro, go for it, but the geometry of a sport bike doesn’t really lend itself to that sort of thing.

Alberta is like how it is in my state, MSF is done on a 125cc, and I could go buy a busa or H2R or whatever.

I’m honestly on the same boat as you regarding potentially getting my 3-wheel endorsement for trikes and sidecars. Do I take the class, or take my 2-wheel experience, get a sidecar on my own, learn it, and take the test.
